Abstract

Objective: Describe and review the knowledge concerning bipolar affective disorder and Borderline personality disorder, their similarities and differences. Bibliographic review: Borderline personality disorder and bipolar affective disorder show similar symptoms, such as mood swings, emotional outbursts, impulsivity and unstable and intense relationships. However, the main difference is the mood swing; while Borderline patients show oscillations within a small interval, Bipolar patients present these mood alterations over a more extended period. A relevant difference to be highlighted is the treatment of both disorders, in which pharmacological treatment in the bipolar patient is the main therapeutic means, while in the borderline individual, psychotherapy is the main therapeutic modality. Due to its similarities, it has been problematic for professionals to close a diagnosis in the practical scenario. Final considerations: Thus, the need for more in-depth studies of such disorders becomes evident so the patients can be appropriately diagnosed and treated.
