Abstract

Objective: To identify the main risk factors for long-term mortality in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the SciELO, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, using the following descriptors: “diabetic foot”, “diabetic feet”, “diabetic foot ulcer”, “diabetic foot complication”, “mortality” and “death”. Studies published between 2018 and 2022 that reported the long-term mortality of patients with diabetic foot ulcers were included. Results: 11 articles made up the final sample of this study, with a higher frequency of retrospective studies (n: 05). It was identified that the main risk factors associated with long-term mortality of patients with diabetic foot ulcers were: advanced age, low socioeconomic status, smoking, duration of diabetes, chronic kidney disease, peripheral artery disease, higher degree of severity of ulcer and presence of previous amputation. Conclusion: It is concluded that several conditions can increase the probability of death in the long term in patients with diabetic foot ulcers, such as general clinical and ulcer characteristics and sociodemographic characteristics. In this way, the screening and management of these risk factors must continue to be important aspects of health promotion policies.
