Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the association between malnutrition determined by the criteria of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and mortality in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study based on the review of medical records from a highly complex public hospital in São Luís - MA. The nutritional diagnosis was collected according to the GLIM criteria at the time of admission to the ICU. To assess the association between the GLIM criteria and in-hospital mortality, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: 141 patients participated in the study. The median value of the Simplified Acute Physiology Score 3 (SAPS 3) was 46 with an Interquartile Range (IQR) of 36-61. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 24.22 ± 4.98 kg/m² and 53.19% had reduced calf circumference. According to GLIM, 39.72% presented moderate malnutrition and 21.28% severe malnutrition. The percentage of deaths was 34.04%. Patients diagnosed with moderate and severe malnutrition had 2.61 (p 0.041) and 2.91 (p 0.038) significantly greater chances of in-hospital mortality. Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of malnutrition in patients admitted to the ICU using GLIM and that the diagnosis of malnutrition using this tool anticipates mortality and can guide interventions, with important implications for clinical practice and research.
