Abstract
Objective: To investigate the literature about the influence of depression on the quality of life of medical students from public and private institutions. Methods: The search for scientific articles was carried out in the LILACS, SCIELO, PubMed and Acervo+ Index base databases with depression Decs and medical students. 196 articles were found, 182 articles were excluded, which were not used due to the exclusion criteria, thus, 14 articles were considered suitable for discussion. Results: Physiological functions, affective and emotional behavior and social interactions are affected by the entire atmosphere of competitiveness and daily demands. Men manifest symptoms of anxiety and depression through the consumption of alcohol or drugs and the female gender usually demonstrates internalized sadness, frequent crying and withdrawal. Increases in drug addiction, abandonment of the bear and suicide are also reported. Final considerations: The university environment for medical students can often be considered hostile due to the pressure associated with the course, demands and competitiveness. Women are the most affected by depressive and anxiety disorders.
