Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Bibliographic review: BPD is a chronic disorder characterized by invasive patterns of affective instability, self-image disturbances, instability of interpersonal relationships, marked impulsivity and suicidal behavior (suicide ideation and attempt), causing significant damage and suffering in the individual's life. Its pathophysiology is a combination of genetic predisposition associated with environmental factors and neurobiological dysfunction. BPD is the most commonly diagnosed personality disorder in hospital and outpatient settings, with a prevalence of between 0.5 and 2.7% in the general population. Final considerations: Borderline personality disorder is a serious problem both for the individual, who is often unable to perform his or her functions, and for society and the health system, which suffers from a great burden due to the numerous comorbidities coexisting with BPD . In this context, the treatment of this condition is essential. First-line therapy for BPD is psychotherapy such as dialectical behavior therapy, transference-oriented psychotherapy, mentalization-based therapy, and schema therapy. In addition, pharmacological options such as antipsychotics and antidepressants can be used.
