Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Bibliographic review: MG is an antibody-mediated autoimmune disease that affects the postsynaptic membrane at the neuromuscular junction, being produced by different antibodies against synaptic membrane proteins. This is generally, in more than 85% of cases, caused by a type of antibody against the skeletal muscle acetylcholine receptor (AChR-ab). The disease is rare; the estimated annual incidence is 1 to 2 cases per 100,000, and its worldwide prevalence is 150 to 250 cases per million individuals. Final considerations: MG is a neuromuscular junction disorder whose main clinical feature is fluctuating weakness that worsens with exercise and improves with rest. Its diagnosis is clinical, laboratory with serologies for antibodies associated with the disease and from tests such as electromyography. MG therapy involves symptom control with Pyridostigmine and modulation with steroidal and non-steroidal immunosuppressive therapies. Currently, there is still the option of using intravenous immunoglobulin and plasma exchange.
