Abstract
Objective: to describe the costs of hospitalizations with the use of peripheral vascular stents in the Brazilian public health system between the years 2008-2017. Methods: an ecological, retrospective study with time series analysis, obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) on hospitalizations and expenses in the use of vascular stent implants performed in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Results: During the study period, a total of 36,543 hospitalizations for PAD were recorded. A rapid and progressive increase in stent use was observed between the years of the study, with the Southeast (45.7%) and South (36.8%) regions accounting for 82.5% of hospitalizations. Intraluminal angioplasty of extremity vessels with bare-metal stent was the most prevalent (70%) and had the highest total cost. Conclusion: The use of vascular stents has progressively increased between the years of the study, generating a significant impact on hospital occupancy and expenses.
