Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Sjögren's Syndrome (SS). Bibliographic review: Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease of the connective tissue, which involves exocrine glands and can be divided into primary and secondary. The triad of clinical symptoms includes symptoms of dryness, fatigue and pain. As a systemic disease, SS can involve virtually any organ system, leading to extremely pleomorphic clinical manifestations. The incidence rate of SS is 6.92 per 100,000 people per year. Regarding the impact of SS on quality of life, the disease negatively affects the patient's daily activity due to the high prevalence of fatigue, depression, anxiety and decreased physical performance. Final considerations: SS is an autoimmune disease whose main symptoms are: keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia. In addition, it can have multiple involvements at the systemic level. There is no single test for its diagnosis and it should be suspected in patients with persistent symptoms of dryness, enlargement of the parotid gland in addition to an unexplained increase in dental caries. Treatment is with symptoms in cases without systemic involvement and those affected systemically are treated with immunosuppression.
