Abstract

Objective: To understand the perceptions of the elderly about the experience of cancer and its repercussions on healthy aging. Methods: Exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Participants were 10 elderly people of both sexes, with recent or retroactive diagnosis of one of the types of cancer, residing in the South region of Brazil, selected by the “snowball” method. Data collection took place through questions related to health, living with cancer and aging, through a video call on WhatsApp®, between June and September 2022. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: Two categories emerged: Experiences of cancer in the elderly: feelings in the diagnosis, acceptance of the diagnosis, overcoming, isolation, support from family, friends and church, faith and spirituality. Repercussions of cancer in the elderly: self-care, prevention of cancer recurrence, optimism, valuing life, difficulties. Conclusion: Among the experiences and repercussions caused by cancer, strengthening faith and spirituality, accepting the diagnosis, overcoming challenges, expanding self-care and valuing life are relevant aspects for the elderly. It is urgent to qualify health care and continue studies that show cancer in old age, broadening reflections on the need to promote the health of this public, in search of healthy public policies.
