Abstract

Objective: The scope of this work was to carry out an updated review regarding the efficacy, risks and beneits of using Domperidone as a lactation inducer on puerperal women. Bibliographic review: Breastfeeding involves not only biological impulses, but also social, psychological and cultural aspects, being also historically associated with a variety of beliefs and myths. Therefore, the use of unregulated and unapproved lactogenic drugs has increased consideraby as way to mitigate the growing rates of eraly weaning, since an adequate breastfeeding has been scientifically demonstrated to provide benefits for mother and baby. Domperidone is a widely used drug capable of increasing prolactin secretion by the adenohypophysis, as well as antagonizing dopamine effects on milk production. Despite the controversial use of Domperidone as a galactogogue, the adverse effects reports have been limmited to nausea, headaches and dry mouth. However its efficacy, administration length and dosage have not been standardized, being largely variable. Final considerations: Scientifical eveidences have demonstrated that Domperidone is considered safe and moderatly effective in increasing milk production on healty puerperal women after preterm births. However, standardized randomized robust trials are needed to cover a larger amplitude of different at term maternal conditions.
