Abstract
Objective: To report the impacts on neuropsychomotor development arising from corrective cardiac surgery used in children affected by a congenital heart disease. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, with articles published between 2012 and 2022, in Portuguese, English or Spanish and with content available in full. As research guiding problem, we used: Does the newborn who is born with congenital heart disease and undergoes heart surgery have an impact on neuropsychomotor development? The bibliographical research was carried out between November and December 2022, searching the following databases: PubMed, MedLine and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): Cardiac Surgery, Newborn and Neurodevelopmental Disorders were used with the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: 15 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria demonstrated that neurodevelopmental disorders are evident in the postoperative context of children with congenital heart disease. Final considerations: The current literature has limitations regarding the approach to the impacts studied in the short term for the patients included in the study. However, it exposes that despite the inherent damages to congenital heart disease, corrective cardiac surgery in newborns exposes individuals to physiological changes. These are responsible for systematizing worse outcomes for neuropsychomotor development.
