Abstract

Objective: To describe and compare mortality from acute diarrheal syndrome among elderly individuals in the regions and states of Brazil, between 2016 and 2020. Methods: Ecological study using data collected through the DATASUS death registry provided by the Mortality Information System (SIM), as well as resident population data for each state and region. The number of deaths due to acute diarrheal disease (ADD) among elderly individuals was included, along with resident population and its geographic distribution. Results: Between 2016 and 2020, there was a decrease in the total number of deaths from ADD with an average coefficient of mortality (CoM) of 1.04/10,000 inhabitants was observed in Brazil. There was a significant difference between the Northeast region (1.61/10,000) compared to the Southeast (0.82/10,000), South (0.8/10,000), Midwest (0.95/10,000), and Brazil as a whole (1.04/10,000), except for the North region. The states with higher CoM were located in the Northeast and North regions such as Roraima (2016 and 2018), Alagoas (2017), Piauí (2019) and Amazonas (2020). Conclusion: The average CoM for elderly people with ADD in the Northeast region was higher than that of Brazil's other regions combined; moreover, among states with greater CoM were those located in both Northeastern and Northern regions.
