Abstract

Objective: To analyze clinical and epidemiological aspects of low bone mass in menopausal women with HIV. Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) increased the life expectancy of people living with HIV (PLH), who are experiencing clinical issues of the elderly population. Many of these are women reaching the menopause/climacteric phase, which means an important challenge to clinicians, who are not well prepared to this complex management. In women living with HIV (WLH), hypoestrogenism resulting from ovarian failure joins to traditional risk factors and those related to HIV infection leading to low bone mass and potential risk of fractures. Evidence suggests periodic screening for low bone mass, calcium and vitamin D supplementation and the use of bisphosphonates for osteoporosis treatment. Final considerations: There are several data gaps regarding the relationship between HIV and the menopause, including the effect of hormone therapy (TH) on bone. It’s fundamental of clinicians to be aware of the full needs of WLH, that comprises much more than viral control, including a special management of bone mass.
