Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of depression in the elderly or late-life depression (LLD). Bibliographic review: Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders at the end of life with a tendency to increase due to the increase in the elderly population. LLD is defined as depression that occurs after the age of 60 and is estimated to affect approximately 12% of elderly people in the community and 35% in long-term care facilities. LLD is associated with impaired cognitive functioning, reduced quality of life, increased mortality and suicide rates. Final considerations: LDD is a serious global public health problem that generates high morbidity and mortality. In this sense, its treatment is done through psychotherapy with problem-solving therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy; pharmacotherapy mainly with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; psychoeducation; encouraging a healthier life with physical exercise, smoking cessation and healthy eating; in addition to encouraging leisure activities, both individual and group, in order to ease the feeling of loneliness.
