Abstract

Objective: To describe the coping strategies used by nursing workers, within the scope of the Mobile Emergency Care Service to guarantee individual protection in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Experience Report: The study considered, as a stressful event, the fragility of the management of the Mobile Emergency Care Service located in a capital in the Northeast, aimed at protecting health workers in the health crisis of COVID-19. In this context, the following stand out: the inadequacy of personal protective equipment, the inapplicability of institutional protocols to the pandemic context, added to the incipience of institutional flows, the lack of training for the interventionist team and inadequate physical structure for the decontamination of ambulances. Faced with the absence of conducive dialogical spaces for listening, workers' co-participation in discussions and decision-making processes, nursing workers assumed as coping strategies: Self-control, Social Support, Acceptance of Responsibility, Escape-Avoidance, Planning, Confrontation, Withdrawal or Distancing-Problem Solving and Positive Reappraisal. Final considerations: Nursing's role in assuming a compilation of coping strategies to guarantee individual protection, culminated in sustainable institutional advances, with emphasis on the improvement of work processes.
