Abstract

Objective: To characterize the health profile and nutritional status of live newborns delivered by cesarean section in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Methods: An observational-descriptive study was conducted using SINASC data recorded from 2013 to 2017. Neonatal health indicators, maternal characteristics, and information about healthcare assistance and location of delivery were evaluated. Results: The analysis showed the following characteristics of newborns: higher prevalence for male sex, classification of brown ethnicity/race, and appropriate classification of 5-minute Apgar score. Annual variations were observed in the percentages of low scores of the 5-minute Apgar score. Newborns with a low 5-minute Apgar score had lower mean birth weights than those with an adequate score for this index, except in the high weight for age category. Conclusion: The evaluation of 5-minute Apgar score and birth weight are relevant for the immediate assessment of newborns, contributing to epidemiological surveillance and improvement of public health policies and maternal and neonatal healthcare assistance in Amazonas.
