Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the benefits of using essential oils as a non-pharmacological intervention during labor. Methods: This is a bibliographic study, an integrative review of the literature, conducted on the databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, and Cochrane, between 2012 and 2022, in Portuguese and English. After applying eligibility criteria, 11 studies were included in the descriptive analysis. Results: Fourteen different essential oils were identified and used in various ways to reduce anxiety, fear, and pain intensity in different stages of labor. The results showed that the use of essential oils can promote relaxation, pain relief, reduce the need for pharmacological methods, decrease anxiety, and improve the mood of the parturient. Final considerations: The use of essential oils during labor can be a beneficial and promising intervention for the parturient, improving their experience and labor progression, as well as providing a bond between the professional and the pregnant woman. However, more research is needed to confirm these results and explore the best practices for using essential oils in childbirth assistance.
