Abstract

Objective: To analyze the trend of mortality among children under 5 years of age residing in Palmas, Tocantins, based on the "Brazilian List of Avoidable Causes of Death". Methods: Time series ecological study based on epidemiological data of mortality in children under 5 years of age. Trend analysis included Poisson regression models. Results: 67.52% of deaths were avoidable. Avoidable deaths due to adequate attention to women during pregnancy predominated. There were significant declines in the mean annual percent change of avoidable death rates for immunization actions (AAPC: -2.6; 95% CI: -4.1 to -1.0), attention to women during childbirth (AAPC: -2.0; 95% CI: -9.8 to 6.5), neonatal care (AAPC: -13.4; 95% CI: -19.4 to -6.9), adequate diagnosis and treatment (AAPC: -5.9; 95% CI: -8.2 to -3.5), and health promotion (AAPC: -5.2; 95% CI: -7.6 to -2.6). The rates of avoidable deaths due to attention to women during pregnancy (AAPC: -0.5; 95% CI: -2.4 to 1.5) and childbirth (AAPC: -2.0; 95% CI: -9.8 to 6.5) remained stable. Conclusion: The stability in avoidable death rates among children under five related to pregnancy and childbirth in Palmas indicates failures in health care and highlights the need to advance in the quality of prenatal care.
