Abstract

Objective: To identify national and/or international scientific articles that assess the relationship between breastfeeding in premature newborns and the Kangaroo Mother Care. Methods: This is an Integrative Literature Review The search was carried out in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) databases, in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and National Library of Medicine (PubMed) portals and the collection period occurred between October and November 2021. The composition of the review corpus was 12 studies. Results: from the analysis of the productions, two categories emerged: Challenges of the implementation of the Kangaroo Mother Care in the hospital environment and the effects of the Kangaroo Mother Care on the health and breastfeeding of premature and low birth weight newborns. Final considerations: The Kangaroo Mother Care promotes greater bonding and adherence to breastfeeding, in addition to improving parameters of vital and neurobehavioral signs of the newborn. The current study shows that newborns cared for using the Kangaroo Mother Care presented earlier medical discharges and a lower rate of readmission with respect to those treated with the conventional method.
