Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).  Bibliographic review: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and often debilitating psychiatric condition, with a prevalence of 1 to 2% worldwide. OCD is characterized by the presence of obsessive behaviors in addition to recurrent compulsions. This disorder is usually accompanied by a range of psychiatric comorbidities, substantially reduced quality of life, and long-term socioeconomic adversity. The incidence of OCD is generally highest during preadolescence (median onset 11 years) and early adulthood. OCD is often a devastating disorder for both patients and their families. Final considerations: OCD is a serious neuropsychiatric disorder that causes problems in daily activities, impairs social, academic and work functioning. In this context, its early identification is essential to avoid such damage. Its treatment is done through pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors as first-line drugs and cognitive behavioral therapy, which is the first choice for OCD in children and adolescents. CBT for OCD must involve exposure and response prevention.
