Abstract

Objective: To develop a literature review on dental pigmentation resulting from smoking based on the analysis of scientific articles, theses and dissertations. Bibliographic review: Smoking is a risk factor for several diseases in the oral cavity. The main clinical manifestations in the oral cavity are xerostomia, hyposalivation, periodontal disease, halitosis and benign/malignant lesions and dental pigmentation. The compounds present in tobacco smoke, especially nicotine, are responsible for the discoloration of dental tissues. Changing the color of teeth affects the aesthetics of tobacco users and is one of the most visible consequences of smoking. The degree of discoloration depends on the intensity, duration and frequency of smoking. Final considerations: Substances present in tobacco smoke are capable of altering tooth color, since pigmentation settles on the surface of teeth and promotes discoloration. The dental surgeon is a qualified professional to rehabilitate the oral health of smoking patients, through the elaboration of individualized treatment plans, which may include prophylaxis, whitening treatment, in addition to making patients aware of the adverse effects of smoking and encouraging them to quit the habit of smoking.
