Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the epidemiological profile of hepatitis B in Brazil from 2019 to 2021, in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study of confirmed cases of hepatitis B. The data were obtained through the National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and analyzed according to the following variables: notification by region; sex; age, education, and probable means of transmission. Results: 29,417 cases of hepatitis B were confirmed in Brazil, with 14,164 recorded in 2019. The disease affected mainly men (n=16,752), brown people (n=11,750) with complete high school education (n=3,020), and the main form of transmission through unprotected sexual intercourse (n=5,656). Conclusion: The study showed that hepatitis B had a drop in the number of cases over the years studied, but that it was probably related to the underreporting of diseases during the pandemic. Hepatitis B control is a global public health issue and should be a priority, even throughout the pandemic. The information investigated may assist in the creation of prevention and awareness programs and target health services to vulnerable populations.
