Abstract

Objective: To address the relationship between Fibromyalgia (FM) and the gastrointestinal tract’s (GIT) health and its importance for the diagnosis and treatment of FM. Literature review: FM is a rheumatological condition mainly characterized by diffuse chronic pain. Other possible manifestations involve fatigue, sleep disorders, cognitive impairment, mood disorders and gastrointestinal symptoms. There is a very close relationship between FM and gastrointestinal disorders and a well-made diagnosis, as well as a good evaluation of the patient, are necessary to achieve the best possible therapeutic result. Final considerations: Although little elucidated, there is a close correlation between FM and GIT. Therefore, it is important to value the symptomatology and know the bidirectional relationship between FM and GI disorders, especially irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, further studies are needed to explore the etiopathogenesis and pathophysiology of FM, as well as the influence of the GIT on these aspects, in order to improve both the diagnosis and the treatment of FM.
