Abstract

Objective: To investigate the literature on the impact of ketamine on postoperative pain management in adult surgical patients. Methods: This is an integrative literature review regarding the use of ketamine in the management of postoperative pain in surgical patients. Data collection began with the research question “What is the impact of ketamine on postoperative pain management in surgical patients?”. Results: The administration of ketamine promoted a decrease in postoperative pain in the first 24 hours and also reduced the need for analgesics in this period. Ketamine can be used effectively and safely for pain control. Final considerations: It was observed that the use of ketamine significantly reduces the need for the use of opioids. The use of the ketamine dose is still controversial among the studies, however, some authors state that the minimum dose of S-ketamine seems to be more efficient to prevent delirium and its analgesic effects are compatible with the use of low dose ketamine.
