Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the use of alternative communication devices and clinical and functional evolution in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Methods: Cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, carried out from October/2020 to March/2021, in three reference outpatient clinics in neurology and specialized care for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Patients of both genders who had been diagnosed for at least one year and who already used some type of alternative communication device were included. Those with visual impairments, illiterates and associated frontal representations were excluded. The sample consisted of 28 patients. Results: Communication applications were the most used by the population served (46.4%). Regarding the clinical and functional evaluation, it was observed that 42.9% had initial difficulty in walking on the lower sides; 39.3% independent and complete self-care in the upper extremities; 39.3% detectable disturbance in speech in the speech component and 46.4% changes in diet consistency during swallowing. Conclusion: The use of devices and the clinical and functional evaluation of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is extremely important, since their use can provide a better quality of life, as well as better direct the treatment and follow-up of the patient.
