Abstract

Objective: To analyze the impact of polypharmacy on the quality of life of the elderly population. Method: This is an integrative review, in which data collection was performed in the virtual library of scientific articles that presented significant results. The selection of articles was used by the scientific platforms Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), in Portuguese, English or Spanish, in individuals over 60 years, with publication between the years 2010 and 2022. Results: The terms “Elderly”, “Polypharmacy” and “Quality of Life” were the databases with application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, obtaining 254 articles, of which 15 were selected. Final considerations: Polypharmacy is a frequent reality in the elderly population. With the inappropriate prescription of drugs and because of their adverse reactions, it is of utmost importance to highlight the drug prescription process, as well as to consider the quantity of drugs, the periodicity of doses, the prescribed posology, and the guidelines for management.
