Abstract
Objective: To carry out a bibliographic survey on the main aspects, advantages and limitations of dental contact lenses. Bibliographic review: Dental contact lenses are an aesthetic option to improve the smile quickly and with little dental wear. Among the advantages are high durability, preservation of the remaining tooth structure, ease of application and satisfactory aesthetic result. With these lenses, it is possible to correct problems such as misaligned teeth, stains, chips and spacing between teeth. However, there are some disadvantages, such as the impossibility of changing the color of the teeth by more than two tones, the limitation in cases of great modification of the dental position, the need to maintain good oral hygiene and the contraindication in cases of insufficient superficial tooth enamel, occlusal overload, bruxism, periodontal disease and major coronary destruction. Final considerations: Dental contact lenses are a modern and less invasive aesthetic option to improve the smile. With technical advancements and materials, they provide aesthetic and natural results, as long as they are correctly indicated and cared for. The dentist should perform an individualized evaluation to determine if they are the best option for each patient seeking the perfect smile.
