Abstract
Objective: Identify the impacts of vegetarian diet on cardiovascular diseases. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted through the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The descriptors " Dieta Vegetariana and Doenças Cardiovasculares" and "Vegetarian Diet and Cardiovascular Disease" were selected in the fields of title, abstract, and subject. The results were filtered using the criteria provided on the website. Results: A total of 673 articles were found, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 99 articles were selected. Subsequently, the abstracts were read, and 15 final articles were selected for analysis. The reviewed studies presented similar interpretations regarding vegetarian diet. Adherence to this diet was associated with a reduction in most analyzed cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes, with agreement on some results and divergence on others. Conclusions: Based on the analyzed studies, vegetarian diet was shown to play an important role in the prevention and reduction of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, adopting a vegetarian diet may be an effective strategy in the prevention and management of these diseases, although further studies are needed for a more comprehensive understanding and the establishment of specific dietary guidelines.
