Abstract

Objective: To validate the construct of the self-care assessment instrument for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Methodological study to verify the instrument's psychometric properties. Empirical and analytical procedures were used. The first consisted of planning the application, application and collection. The socio-demographic questionnaire and the self-care assessment tool for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were used for data collection. Data collection took place with 600 patients in Basic Health Units in the municipalities of Aracaju and Itabaiana, and in the Specialty Center of Diabetes. In the analytical procedures, Factor Analysis and the reliability test were performed, using Cronbah's Alpha. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: 96 items were maintained in the instrument, reorganized into six domains, with reliability ranging from adequate to excellent, with a total instrument precision of 0.89. Conclusion: The instrument proved to be valid, reliable and ready for use in clinical practice in the studied context. More studies should be carried out for application in other scenarios.
