Abstract
Objective: To review the scientific production related to maternal death caused by the COVID-19 infection in Brazil, identifying possible contributing factors to this outcome. Bibliographic review: The health system had to reorganize itself during the pandemic, compromising women's health care, as attention and resources were focused on controlling the disease, and the scenario was aggravated by overloaded services. Barriers to accessing care persist in many hospitals and outpatient clinics in the country. A small number of maternity hospitals have ICUs, and the availability of places is uneven. Municipalities with a high vulnerability index and high social inequalities were particularly affected. It is believed that the cause of so many deaths could also be linked to the greater aggressiveness of the Gamma variant of the SARS-Cov2 virus. There is strong evidence that vaccination against COVID-19 has a protective effect against adverse outcomes. Final considerations: At present, it is valuable to emphasize the importance of the experience of the pandemic to managers about the conditions of health services and the need for investments in the entire field of women's health, aiming to improve the efficiency of care, and preparing the system for future needs, including new pandemics.
