Abstract

Objective: To analyze nurses' perception of patient participation in safety issues. Methods: This was a cross-sectional quantitative and qualitative study. Participants answered a semi-structured questionnaire with three closed and six open questions. In the closed ones, professionals assigned scores from 1 to 5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. Open responses were analyzed by inductive content analysis of manifest content. Results: 19 nurses participated. 63% rated the involvement of patients with a score of 3. Regarding the encouragement of patients by the team, 42% assigned a score of 4. As for the level of safety, 58% assigned a 4. The participants stated that involving the patient in promoting safety is essential and providing guidelines favor participation. Factors that prevent patient involvement: lack of material resources, cultural factors, absence of a companion and problems related to the team. Conclusion: It is concluded that patients are little encouraged by professionals to play an active role during care, in addition, institutional policies for patient involvement are not clear. Therefore, the patient's participation in his own safety is related to the behavior of professionals and the institutional culture.
