Abstract

Objective: To understand the relationship between the stressors imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and significant changes in the clinical presentation of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Methods: This is an integrative review, with publications carried out between 2020 and 2023 in English, Portuguese or Spanish and with content available in full for free. To guide the research, the problem was used: “Has the patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) had his clinical condition aggravated by stressors inherent to the COVID-19 pandemic?”. The research was carried out in the PubMed, Acervo+ Index Base and MedLine databases, for which the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) “obsessive-compulsive disorder”, “COVID-19” and “pandemia” were used with the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: 14 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria showed that there were behavioral changes in patients with OCD in the pandemic context generated by the coronavirus, which range from an exacerbation of symptoms to more severe outcomes. Final considerations: Despite not obtaining a general consensus on the subject, the literature confirms that the pandemic has changed the behavioral dynamics of patients with OCD. Fear of infection and length of exposure to the media were determining factors in worse outcomes.
