Abstract

Objective: To review the literature on the use of low-level laser as a treatment choice for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Methods: Researched the descriptors “temporomandibular joint disorders”, “phototherapy” and “low-level light therapy”, connected by the Boolean operator “AND”, were searched in the Pubmed database in the last 5 years. Results: 75 articles were obtained, with 11 studies selected, based on the reading of titles and abstracts. Articles in English and available in full that reported the referred subject were included. Laboratory studies, literature reviews and articles that did not address the subject were excluded. 1 clinical trial was selected that observed that the use of photobiomodulation with LEDs was effective in muscle activities.1 a clinical study inferred that laser therapy was effective in isolation. 9 clinical studies concluded that LBI when combined with other therapies promotes positive effects. Final considerations: In short, the articles demonstrated the effectiveness of LLLT for the treatment of TMD, especially when managed in a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach.
