Abstract

Objective: To understand the perceptions of the healthcare team about the use of smartphones in the adult intensive care environment. Methods: This is a descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study, carried out with 41 health professionals from an intensive care center (ICC). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to Minayo's operative proposal. Results: Despite the guidance not to use smartphones, some ICU health professionals used these devices as an auxiliary tool in the treatment of patients, for communication with their families, with the external environment and with professionals from other sectors and/or institutions. The use of cell phones by certain professionals during patient care was also evidenced, including at times that required great attention. Conclusion: Using smartphones in the intensive care environment and disinfecting these devices without following protocols or using standardized products contravene infection prevention measures and can compromise the safety of hospitalized patients.
