Abstract

Objective: To quantify the brown adipose tissue (TAM) activity using thermographic images through the action of the thermogenic pepper and the cold protocol in obese individuals. Methods: Nine obese volunteers submitted to the TAM activation protocol by cold and by the use of capsinoid, in a double-blind study. On the first day, there was a baseline image collection and then they were submitted to the cold protocol and after the double-blind thermogenic protocol, with intervention of the capsule. Image collection took place for 2h30. On the second day, images were recorded after the capsule intervention for 2h30, as described on the first day. Images were analyzed by averaging gray scale values to verify significant alteration. Results: There was no TAM activation for the cold and placebo protocol and there was TAM activation for the capsinoid protocol. Discussion: TAM activation was related to the types of thermosensory receptors that are different for cold and capsinoid and that are influenced by the circadian cycle, environmental factors and amount of white adipose tissue. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the correlation between habits and body composition in TAM activation in obesity.
