Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the importance of vitamin B12 for the mother and her offspring, discussing risk factors and the diagnosis of deficiency and adequate supplementation for each patient. Bibliographic review: Vitamin B12 is essential for cell metabolism, as it acts as a cofactor for enzymes that participate in the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), myelin and fatty acids. Maternal deficiency can have consequences for the development of the fetus and child. To make the diagnosis, it is necessary to take into account the clinical and laboratory findings. Faced with situations of risk of deficiency due to food or malabsorption, prevention with supplementation is a main priority. Final considerations: Cobalamin is extremely important during pregnancy and breastfeeding, generating greater attention and health care for pregnant women, puerperal women and newborns, especially in relation to the ones that need supplementation.
