Abstract
Objective: To assess the risk of developing eating disorders in female medical students at an institution of higher education in Curitiba - PR. Methods: 106 students were sampled, predominantly from the basic cycle (1st to 8th period), most living with family members, with normal weight range and showing interest in participating in the Eating Disorders Support Service. The Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) questionnaire was used, filled out virtually through e-mails containing the survey link, sent by the institution itself. Results: From the EAT-26 test, 26.4% of the sample had a positive screening (a score greater than 21), a fact that denotes considerable vulnerability to the development of eating disorders, such as nervous anorexia and bulimia. These values are consistent with the findings of other studies, which used the same test, including medical students. Conclusion: We conclude that there is a positive risk for the development of eating disorders in female medical students in the studied sample, because at this stage there is a great concern with appearance, size and body shape, which is superimposed on stress factors related to the medical course.
