Abstract

Objective: To be aware of the scientific production about bloodstream infections associated with central venous catheter use in individuals undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Methods: This is an Integrative Review, performed in March 2023, with studies in digital format published in journals indexed to national and international data sources, namely: Latin American and Caribbean Information on Life Sciences and Health, the National Library of Medicine, SciVerse Scopus, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Wiley Online Library. Results: 13,299 articles were identified, and after implementing the inclusion criteria, eight studies were selected as the final sample. Most publications were international and focused on the year 2022, showing worrying numbers about hospitalisations related to the catheter for hemodialysis by gramme-positive microorganisms being associated with hospital admissions and population mortality. Final considerations: Infectious staging is associated with the presence of risk factors that range from individual aspects to aspects related to microorganisms and hemodialysis therapy itself. The care identified in the literature will support the development of quality criteria for monitoring patients using a catheter, with a view to reducing infections and improving processes for their control.
