Abstract
Objective: To discuss about guidelines, orientations, and management of retinoblastoma based on scientific updates, and to consider the importance of the red reflex test for early identification of this pathology. Literature review: The red reflex test is crucial for detecting retinal changes because the prognosis of retinoblastoma varies according to the delay in detection and treatment. The specificity of the red reflex test was calculated to be 98%, its sensitivity is greater than 40% in non-ideal conditions, and 92.6% when the test is performed according to appropriate standards. Final considerations: It is recommended to perform the Red Reflex Test soon after the baby's birth and three times a year until the child is three years old. This way, if the disease is detected, the prognosis is favorable, and the chances of cure are 90%.
