Abstract

Objective: Translate and cross-culturally adapt the Nurses' knowledge of port-a-cath maintenance instrument to the Portuguese spoken in Brazil. Methods: Qualitative study of translation and cross-cultural adaptation, performed in a teaching hospital in Northeast Brazil. Based on international recommendations and initiated after authorization by the author of the instrument, following these steps: translation of the original into Portuguese by two native Portuguese bilingual translators; reverse translation by two native English translators; synthesis of translations into Portuguese by another translator; review by a committee of multidisciplinary judges (five nurses specialists in the subject), pre-test with 30 nurses and reconciliation to prepare the final version. Research approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Data expressed in absolute and percentage frequency, average and standard deviation. Results: Semantic, conceptual and item issues were discussed and resolved in the committee. Application in the allotted time (20 minutes), need to group questions and answers. Final version approved by the author of the original. Conclusion: Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the original instrument into Brazilian Portuguese were successful, the semantic, conceptual, item and operational properties were maintained and the instrument “Necessary knowledge of nurses in port-a-cath care” was created, fit for test the validity and its psychometric properties.
