Abstract
Objective: To discuss current knowledge about cardiovascular complications and outcomes triggered by COVID-19 in the ICU. Methods: For the integrative review, an advanced search for observational and interventional, quantitative and qualitative studies was used on PubMed and VHL platforms, with the following Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) in English: “Cardiovascular”, “COVID-19”, “Complication” and “Intensive Care Units”, interspersed by the boolean operator AND. Articles from 2019 to 2023, free of charge and in English and/or Portuguese were included, and those that deviated from the guiding question were excluded. Results: Among the 180 articles found, 15 met the defined criteria. A high prevalence of thromboembolic events, myocardial and vascular injuries was observed in thousands of patients with COVID-19 in ICU, with a direct relationship between the change in markers of cardiovascular disease in COVID-19 and poor prognosis, plus a “ripple effect” for new complications with each event. Final considerations: Given the exposed cardiovascular impact of COVID-19 in ICU patients, it is necessary to adopt evidence-based prophylactic measures, starting by epidemiological studies to clarify the occurrence of these events, followed by new prospective cohorts and clinical trials, in order to continuously evaluate these individuals and the interventions made.
