Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the literature about the presence of psychological disorders associated with bariatric surgery. Methods: This is an Integrative Literature Review. The electronic survey was carried out in the LILACS, Pubmed, Scielo, BVS and CAPES journal portal databases. The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCs) ''Bariatric surgery'' and ''Psychiatric Disorders'' were used as search words. Results: Nine studies were selected for qualitative analysis, 6 of which were taken from the Pubmed platform, 2 from Scielo and 1 from the LILACS platform. It was observed that patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery have a high prevalence of psychological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, binge eating disorder, especially when associated with post-surgical weight regain. It was also discussed that bariatric surgery is an efficient technique to promote the improvement of symptoms related to anxiety and binge eating. Final considerations: There was a strong association between the development of depressive and anxiety disorders and weight regain after the surgical procedure. Psychological management of obese patients with mental disorders can be performed using cognitive and behavioral therapies, with higher success rates when initiated after the surgical procedure, before weight regain.
