Abstract
Objectives: To identify the main adverse effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the elderly, demonstrate their characteristics and indications, present the pharmacological particularities of the elderly. Methods: The present study is an integrative literature review. The bibliographic survey took place in the Virtual Health Library (BVS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Nursing Database (BDENF) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), the following descriptors were used: “Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs”, “Elderly” and “Adverse effects”. The following were included: original studies published in full in national and international journals in English, Portuguese or Spanish, with a temporal cut-off of the publication period of the articles (last 5 years). Results: 17 articles were selected for detailed analysis, all studies were published in international journals in the English language. Final considerations: The evaluated studies showed that the main adverse effects of NSAIDs are chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver damage and ototoxicity. Some works have listed some solutions to this problem: the training of health professionals, careful choice of NSAID, use of gastric protectors during treatment with NSAID, monitoring of treatment and guidance for patient awareness.
