Abstract
Objective: To understand the population's knowledge about skin cancer and its relationship with sun exposure, identifying the factors that influence this knowledge. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative, and observational study was conducted with patients who participated in the national skin cancer prevention campaign at a hospital in the state of Paraíba. Questionnaires composed of items on phenotypic characterization, knowledge about the topic, and opinions about the campaign were administered. Statistical analysis of the data was then conducted. Results: There was a higher prevalence of female individuals, older adults, and individuals with lower phototypes. The percentage of patients who claimed to have prior knowledge about skin cancer was 88.9%. A statistically significant relationship was also found between the studied variables. Furthermore, it was observed that men use sunscreen less frequently, and the elderly showed a lower level of knowledge about the topic. Conclusion: Considering the data from the article, it is important to emphasize the significance of assessing the population's knowledge about sun exposure and protective measures. It is expected that this study will provide important support for public health actions aimed at skin cancer prevention in the city of João Pessoa, especially men and elderly people.
