Abstract

Objective: To identify, in the speeches of nursing professionals, practices that may influence the comfort of newborns during therapeutic hypothermia, identify possible semiological signs that characterize discomfort and describe aspects of comfort. Methods: Descriptive research with a quantitative and qualitative approach, developed in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a university hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The collection took place between February and June 2022; 28 nursing professionals participated in the study. From the textual data originated by the semi-structured interview, data processing was carried out using the Iramuteq 7.2 software. Results: Five categories emerged, namely: semiologic findings in the newborn, comfort predications, comfort practices, neurological protection and family embracement. The care elements that can promote comfort to the newborn were related to environmental, physical and sociocultural aspects. Conclusion: It was possible to identify that neurological protection, reduction of light and noise, pain relief and the presence of parents are practices that promote comfort for newborns undergoing therapeutic hypothermia in neonatal units, this study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the concept of comfort for health teams that directly assist this clientele, seen the relevance of the humanization of care centered on the client-family.
