Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD). Bibliographic review: BPD is potentially one of the most devastating conditions in premature babies, with long-lasting consequences involving adverse effects on lung function and neurological development. BPD is defined as oxygen requirement for ≥ 28 days from birth to 36 weeks of postmenstrual age. It is the most common complication of premature birth, occurring in 43% of babies born at 28 weeks of gestation or less, and is characterized by arrested lung growth, alveolar simplification, impaired blood vessel development, and abnormal lung function. The incidence of BPD increases with decreasing gestational age (GA) and birth weight. Final considerations: BPD consists of a severe cardiorespiratory morbidity that affects infants born prematurely and/or with very low birth weight, being classified as mild, moderate and severe depending on the infant's need for supplemental oxygen. Its management is carried out through adequate nutrition and moderate fluid restriction, in addition to the administration of diuretics such as furosemide and corticoids such as hydrocortidosone.
