Abstract

Objective: To describe the fundamental principles of the gut microbiota, its contribution to the gut-brain axis, and its possible role in the pathophysiology of depression. Literature review: The imbalance in the relationship between brain-intestine-microbiota can have consequences for the psychic functions of patients, impacting the prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder. Considering that there is a causal role of dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of psychiatric diseases, being able to alter the behavior of individuals. That's because the gut microbiome has the ability to affect brain function through the modulation of neurotransmitters, influencing brain functions. Final considerations: The pathogenesis of depression is multicausal and poorly understood, and it is of paramount importance that the positive impacts on the therapy and prevention of this disorder are further addressed. Further studies on the subject are needed due to the possibility of including a balanced diet, probiotics and lifestyle change, for better intestinal health, as a pillar of treatment of major depressive disorder.
