Abstract
Objective: To identify studies that analyzed the use of different transdermal delivery systems, both for new substances with leishmanicidal potential and for drugs included in the therapeutic arsenal for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Methods: To achieve this goal, the following steps were employed: theme identification, formulation of the guiding question, definition of descriptors and selection of databases, establishment of inclusion and exclusion criteria for the works, literature sampling, and pre-selection of works (reading abstracts and titles); reading of selected studies, and finally, interpretation of results. Results: As a result, 903 studies were found, with 305 using the descriptors "leishmaniasis" AND "drug delivery systems" and 598 with the descriptors "leishmaniasis" AND "transdermal administration". Among these, 820 were excluded after reading the titles and abstracts, and an additional 67 after full-text reading. After thorough analysis and reading, 16 studies were selected. Final considerations: The studies reviewed in this article demonstrate that transdermal delivery systems have shown promise and innovation in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
