Abstract

Objective: To analyze the mortality rate from neoplasms in the population of the municipality of Nova Iguaçu from 2000 to 2019. Methods: Cohort study, analyzing data on deaths from neoplasms specified in the ICD 10 subchapters (C00 to C97) of the Mortality Information System, including individuals aged ≥ 20 years, separated by gender, year, type of neoplasm, education, ethnicity, marital status and age group. Results: 14,875 deaths from neoplasms were recorded (50.3% female), an average of 371.8 deaths/year. The mortality rate grew 68% from 2002 (77.8/100,000 inhab.) to 2018 (113.5/100,000 inhab.) with proportional mortality ranging from 9% to 16%. The digestive system accumulated more deaths, with a predominant age group between 60-79 years. The subchapters C00-C14, C15-C26, C30-C39, C40-C41, C43-C44, C50, C51-C58, C60-C63, C64-C68, C81- C96 showed difference in deaths between genders (p≤0.05). Conclusion: The mortality rate from neoplasms almost doubled in 20 years, being higher in females, with a predominance in the age group between 60 and 79 years in both sexes. The highest number of deaths from neoplasms was related to the digestive system, followed by pulmonary and intrathoracic organs, 1/3 of deaths in females were related to the mammary system and reproductive organ.
