Study of the determination of the percentage of congenital syphilis in the cities of Ribeirão Preto and Franca

Abstract

Objective: To analyze data on congenital syphilis in the city of Ribeirão Preto e Franca between the years 2016 to 2021. Methods: This is a descriptive, exploratory and time series study. The collected data are in the public domain obtained from the DATASUS System. Results: In both municipalities, diagnosed cases of acquired syphilis were higher in men than in women. Most pregnant women diagnosed with congenital syphilis had low education. From the data collected until 2021, most women were tested positively in the first trimester (average of 55% in Ribeirão Preto and 41.6% in Franca), however, about 30% of diagnoses were performed only in the third trimester of pregnancy. The low percentages of diagnosed pregnant women who were followed up in both cities show a situation of underreporting of cases of congenital syphilis in the DATASUS system. Conclusion: There were no discrepant numbers among the information collected during the years observed, which implies few changes in the system of capturing women diagnosed with congenital syphilis. It is noted that low education reveals greater socioeconomic vulnerability. This makes it possible to reflect on the relevance of public health actions in order to minimize transmission.
